Santa Cruz County Skeptics

About

The Santa Cruz County Skeptics are a group of Science Enthusiasts, Critical Thinkers, Humanists, and of course, Skeptics. The group was formed to create a community of loosely like-minded individuals for socializing, activities, and community science and critical thinkging education.

Some of our events, so far, have included going the The Mystery Spot in Santa Cruz, The Bigfoot Discovery Museum in Felton, and social meetups in downtown Santa Cruz.

What is a Skeptic?

We like this definition from Wikipedia: “Skepticism is a questioning attitude or doubt toward knowledge claims that are seen as mere belief or dogma.”

Being skeptical doesn’t mean you don’t believe in anything, or question everything all the time. We just require evidence. And some things which are well established facts don’t require being skeptical, for example, knowing the Sun will shine the following day.

Here are a few great quotes that sum up skepticism well:

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

The simplest explanation (one that required the fewest assumptions) is most likely the correct one.

It’s good to have an open mind, but not so open that all your brains fall out.
